The Coal thieves of Jharia

With no other source of income the Locals of Jharia have taken to stealing and looting the Coal from coal trucks which transport the coal from the coal mines to the storage depots.For India, the Jharia coal fields in Dhanbad, Jharkhand is the source of most of the nation's coal. But for the people who live above an inferno, Jharia is a condemned place. For almost a century, fires have burned uncontrolled in the mines beneath Jharia, polluting the air with poisonous fumes and splitting the ground with dangerous fissures. The fires cause land to subside, swallowing buildings and releasing poisonous gases which contaminate air, water and land.For the impoverished local residents of Jharia, stealing coal to sell and picking through collapsed buildings for salvageable material is a dangerous way of life. And now, with the earth literally collapsing beneath their feet, they face an ecological disaster.

由于沒有其他經濟來源，加里亞當地居民不得不從往返于煤礦和儲煤倉庫的運煤車上偷搶煤塊。位于加爾克漢德邦丹巴德的加里亞煤田是印度國內最主要的煤炭來源地。但是對于當地居民來說，加里亞簡直就是一座煉獄。近一個世紀以來，來自加里亞煤區地下的地火一直在無休止的燃燒，導致有毒氣體污染大氣，大地被撕裂成危險的裂隙。地火致使土地塌陷，吞噬著地上建筑并釋放出有毒氣體污染著空氣，水和土壤。對于窮困潦倒的加里亞當地居民來說，偷搶煤塊和去倒塌建筑里拾荒是十分危險的謀生手段。現在，隨著他們腳下土地繼續塌陷，當地居民正面臨著嚴重的生態災難。
